Treatment prices vary from £54 (for a pay as you go chiropractic adjustment) to £39 per session (if you book a course of care).
People often want to know how long it will take to get the results and what this will mean in terms of the OVERALL cost of their care.
To understand this we need to talk about the different types of care.
If you are looking for RELIEF care only, then the average person will get significant to complete relief of their symptoms within the 6-12 visit range. The exact number of sessions required varies due to seriousness of the problems, the length of time it has been there and the age/health of the person who is receiving care. The way that you treat your body when you leave the office (i.e. How you live your life and the amount of stress that you are exposed to) can also have an impact on the speed of your recovery.
Most cases will see a progressive improvement in symptoms right from the first session and even notice immediate changes in the way that their body works. After each session you will notice that your posture ‘pops up’, your shoulders come back, you stand and walk in a balanced fashion and your breathing will be noticeably lighter and deeper. These are all signs that your body is better balanced and has begun the healing journey.
This is the most valuable side to chiropractic care and the highest level of service that we can offer you.
This phase of care is where we work with advanced chiropractic techniques and simply lifestyle changes to gradually correct the damage that has accrued in your body over the years. We can see very significant improvements in body structure within just 3-6 months of this type of care, often managing to reverse years to decades worth of damage. The only form of chiropractic care that can achieve true structural correction is the type that we practice at SpineCentral (Advanced Biostructural Correction (ABC) Technique).
ABC is the science to rebuilding bodies. Ideal posture and full function and performance of your body can be regained with this approach. Structural correction will suit people who are looking for a long-term solution to their body structure problems and wanting to invest time, energy and finances into optimising their health potential.
Your chiropractor will discuss with you on your report if you are suitable for this type of care and if our structural correction program is a smart choice for you at this stage.
This is a great question.
In truth it is difficult to answer because very rarely will you find two practitioners in each of these fields who practice exactly the same way.
With that said however, there are some real differences between these professions which are worth noting. They each exist for a reason because they provide a valuable service by solving different problems.
Physiotherapists tend to work with muscles and focus primarily on the region that is hurting. If you had knee pain for example they would likely massage the muscles around the knee, use technology such as ultrasound or interferential and prescribe your some home exercises to do for that joint. Physiotherapists put a big emphasis on rehabilitation of muscles. In some cases they perform spinal manipulation, which is a very different procedure to the spinal adjustments that chiropractors perform.
Osteopaths can be quite similar to chiropractors but rather than use specific ‘adjustments’ to correct spinal misalignments they tend to use long lever based ‘manipulations’ to reduce tension across joints. Osteopaths are often pain based and will generally focus their work to the area of the body that is painful.
Chiropractors are highly trained in spinal adjusting. Which rather than focussing on broad areas of the spine to reduce tension (which osteopathic and physic manipulations do), adjustments are small focussed forces designed to correct a specific misalignment of a single spinal joint. This is done with the intension of taking pressure off of a nerve. To do this correctly requires significant skill and understanding of biomechanics and neurology. This appreciation of the link between spinal alignment and the nervous system gives chiropractors a unique understanding of human health and affords a broader lens through which to assess the underlying problem(s). The pain does not necessarily give away the location of the real problem that caused it. Understanding this is where chiropractic excels.
For example, knee pain may be caused by a weakness in a thigh muscle that is further caused by pelvic and lower back misalignment which is disturbing the neurological communication between the brain and that muscle. With this muscle now weak the knee is vulnerable to injury. The real solution is therefore to correct the problem in the spine and then address the secondary issues at the knee joint. There may also be problems with this patients nutrition or exercise habits that are adding further stress in and preventing healing. The foot and ankle joints may also be a factor to be considered. This holistic understanding of health is common to practitioners of chiropractic.
Chiropractors tend to focus on overall wellness and attempt to restore as many natural conditions as possible (spinal alignment, neurology and lifestyle) to allow the body to heal. Chiropractors work from the premise that the human body is designed to be healthy and that symptoms occur because of imbalances created by an accumulation of lifestyle stresses and injuries in the body. By removing these blockages the body is then able to return to health.
Physiotherapists and Osteopaths can tend to be more medical in their approach by treating painful areas and focussing therapies directly onto them. Many chiropractors also practice with the intent to simply treat symptoms as well. There is probably a 50:50 split within the chiropractic profession between those who practice a wellness based approach and those who are symptom based. Having said that I have also met Osteopaths and Physios who are heavily wellness focussed.
To summarise there are some commonalties among the professions, they can each tend to help with the same problems, it is mostly the philosophy and mindset behind the practitioner and the types of treatments that are used which differ.
Now you probably have an appreciation of the differences and why this is a challenging question to answer completely.
The way that we practice Chiropractic at SpineCentral is not typical. We are one of only a handful of practices in the country that specialise in the revolutionary technique of Advanced Biostructural Correction. We are the only practice that also employs an advanced understanding of Applied Kinesiology to the care of patients. In addition to this we teach the science of living a wellness based lifestyle so that you can look after yourself at home and reach a natural state of complete and well rounded health. We do not limit our focus to only the symptoms in your body. We seek to understand your body from a holistic perspective and address the real underlying cause(s) so that your symptoms subside and their causes are corrected long-term. This detailed and comprehensive approach is what sets us apart from other practices in London.
If you are looking to regain your health and handle the real underlying issues in your body and lifestyle that are holding you back then a Spinecentral Chirorpactor is what you are looking for.
If you are hoping for a quick fix and not willing to invest time and energy into your health then SpineCentral may not be a good fit for you. This is not to say that we cannot provide fast relief of your symptoms. The advanced methods that we employ allow us to hone in on the real problems and put them right quickly. Our main focus is to help you to reach a long term, well rounded and robust state of health, so that outcome should resonate with you first.
The simple truth is that you are a product of the habitual lifestyle that you lead over the many months to years before. Lets say hypothetically that you have headaches related to your neck. We adjust your neck and the headaches go away. You then go home and bang your head against the wall. As chiropractors we cannot see you doing this, but sure enough, each session you go away and bang your head and recreate the problem in your neck. Can you see how there could be a conflict here with us trying to help you get well? The truth is that most of us are ‘banging our heads against the wall’ without ever realising that our habits are creating our problems. Part of our job at SpineCentral is to WAKE YOU UP to the importance of lifestyle and to teach you the concepts and the main habits to begin and the main traps to avoid. This does not have to be a significant amount of work, but it does involve some work. Often it is a case of a few minutes of simple exercises a day and the addition of simple nutritional, stress reduction and movement habits that do not take much effort or time. The more closely you follow the advice the better your overall health results will be and the faster you will get better.
One of the facts about health that you will learn during your time at SpineCentral is that you are not just a back bone. You are a body where all of the systems and subsystems work together as an integrated whole in a dynamic equilibrium with your environment. Your physiology is continuously adapting and compensating to your immediate internal and external environment and the stresses that you expose it to. This means that you have more control and influence over your health than you ever thought possible. It also means that unless you change some aspects of your approach you may recreate some problems again in the future.
In a nutshell, the lifestyle change is for people who value their health, want to master it and take firm control over their health destiny. You will not be forced into making any changes you don’t want to and the choice and responsibility to act is entirely upon you. We will endeavour to give you the finest quality chiropractic care possible, regardless of how you choose to play at home.
The vast majority of what we do at SpineCentral is pain free. Spinal adjusting is a comfortable process, there is no pain associated with that with the exception of occasional mild to moderate tenderness if your joints are especially inflamed or if you tense up unexpectedly. Any discomfort here is fleeting and very soon passes.
When we work with correcting old injuries that occur to your muscles and ligaments there can be pain involved (similar to that of a deep tissue massage). Again this only lasts for the brief few seconds that we are working on the problem area and then passes. Old injuries are areas of heightened neurological sensitivity and will always be uncomfortable. The good news is that this type of work only needs to be done springily in the beginning of your care. The improvements that occur in your body function are well worth enduring this brief discomfort.
In most cases yes. We are chiropractors and this is what we do. The cracking sound is simply gas escaping the joints and is nothing more sinister than that! Its a bit like the cracking of a whip, the noise that you hear is the joint capsule expansing upon itself in response to the release of gas from within the joint capsule as an adjustment is delivered.
Please remember that as chiropractors we are trained extensively to safely deliver specific adjustments to your spine. We are the only profession that trains for 10-15 hours per week for 4 years on spinal adjusting before we ever provide the service to a member of the public. We also focus on this unique healing art for 8 hours per day, day in and day out, for years. If you are going to go anywhere to get your spine adjusted a chiropractor is your safest and wisest approach. A physiotherapists for example, learns a less specific, simpler approach called manipulation which is learned over a weekend seminar. There is a big difference here.
Our approach at SpineCentral is to always work within your tolerance and if you are someone who quite simply does not want to experience adjustments we have many other tools, techniques and technology to help you get the results you are looking for. Please let your chiropractor know on your next session if you have any questions about this.
Chiropractic care is one of the safest healing professions on the planet. Receiving spinal adjustments is many hundreds of times safer than taking common painkillers. Yet there has been some information in the popular press in recent years that has exaggerated the risks of associated with chiropractic care and more specifically spinal manipulation.
Here is a link to a blog post that has in in-depth discussion on the risks and puts them into proper perspective for you.
No. You will not have to keep coming forever for this to work for you.
Once you have been through a care program and gotten positive results we do recommend maintenance care for most people because the modern world is like a pressure cooker. This is a choice however and not a necessity. The people who choose it do so because they love the results that they have experienced and they want to insure that they keep these benefits for life.
Our bodies get exposed to multiple stresses every day and new problems can be created. We find that it is much better to live life in an ongoing state of full function and comfort by finding and correcting new problems as they arise and maintaining good working order as you age. This is just an option however. If you go through corrective care a lot of damage of the past will be corrected and your spine will remodel and rehabilitate significantly. This can result in a body that is much more robust to the stress and strain of modern life. Provided that you take care of your lifestyle and avoid excess stress and accidents then you may go for months to years without any recurrence of your problems.
The truth is that some people make the conscious decision to see a chiropractor for life. Why do they choose that? Quite simply because they can tell the difference between how good life is when they are well adjusted versus the difficulties they face when their body is out of balance and locked into stress. For many people it makes sense to proactively invest into their health and to ‘keep it topped up’ that to wait for issues to arise.
There is a level of chiropractic care for everyone.
This is one of the common questions from people early in their care. I like to hear it because it means people are thinking about their bodies and the changes that they are going through. I;ll have you consider that developing an internal ‘awareness' of your body is crucial to achieving and maintaining a high level of health long-term.
Yes there are some areas of your spine where the joints are chronically mis-alignmed and have adapted to the poor position. This means that the bones themselves can change shape, the surrounding ligaments, muscles, tendons and soft tissues remodel and become tight, scarred and weak. This means that this joint will require a ‘re-education’ and repeated work to help it remodel, reposition and strengthen in the ideal alignment.
If you have ever had braces fitted to your teeth you will know that within around 6 weeks your teeth are noticeably straighter already. However if you were to take the braces out at the point when the teeth first straighten they will quickly distort back out of alignment again. This is why braces are left in for 18-24 months, long after the improvements are first noted. This way the ligaments teeth, their roots and the bones of the jaw can remodel and adapt for long term results.
Your spine is no different.
We use a technique called Advanced Biostructural Correction at SpineCentral. It is the only approach I have identified over my 10 years of searching that can truly reverse the structural damage that you have accrued over your lifetime. It is the only approach that can predictably and consistently turn back the hands of time. Each session will peel back a layer and you will come back on the next visit with a slightly different alignment as your body has ‘unwound’ and worked through tension settling upon a new pattern. As time progresses there is less and less work to do as your body regains ideal alignment.
I do not like the phrase ‘you have to get worse to get better’. This usually means that something has been forced to change too much before it was ready. However some truth to it. Let me explain.
One of the important principles in health is to work with nature, not against it. This means that it is not wise to 'force the issue'.
With the ABC technique we work on the right problems, at the right time, that are unique to your body as it ‘unwinds’ through years of accumulated stress.
Typically after each session you will feel your posture pop upright, your shoulder relax and go back, your breathing deepen and your balance improve. Many people also report feeling 'lighter’ after their sessions.
As your body progresses through unwinding there will be short periods of time when you are symptomatic. This is not something to fear, but something to celebrate, because it means that old problems that were previously compensated for (a bit like painting over rust) have now been exposed and can finally be corrected.
This graph explains the amazing journey of unwinding that you can expect to go thorough when you embark upon the journey of structural correction:
The process of true structural correction can only be speed up by increasing the frequency of your visits. Twice per week results in a very good rate of progress. We don’t see much added benefit to going three times per week. Once per week will produce slow to moderate progress for you. This is why we recommend twice per week as the best approach, certainly at the beginning of your care.
You can however slow your progress down by making some classic mistakes in your lifestyle, stressing your body unduly and creating new problems as you go. We will teach you how to avoid these common pitfalls.
It is important to note that you cannot stretch, exercise or strengthen your way to true structural correction. That is why we do not bombard you with home exercises. Staying generally active is all that you are required to do. Keep your body moving with a daily walk, gym session or your favourite sport.
This is another good question.
It can take quite a long time or your body to truly heal and realign. The reason for this is simply that there is a lot of damage to work through in most peoples cases. As a general rule the earlier in life that you start the less work that there is to do and the faster the body heals.
Think of it like training for a marathon. It can take many months of regular work to build up your fitness. The same happens in your body, it can take many months to unwind through the layers of problems and restore full structural fitness. Please note that pain relief happens early in care and in most cases is achieved quite quickly. Rebuilding your body does require you to work past the point of initial symptom relief.
I would also like to point out the importance of maintaining proper perspective. The type of chiropractic care that we deliver at spine central is remodelling your body and correcting years worth of damage and poor posture. This is not a small thing to achieve. If we compare this to taking blood pressure medication for example, that's a treatment every single day for the rest of your life, and it is not even addressing the underlying cause. It is merely treating a symptom. The results that we can achieve with your body do take time, but they are correcting the true cause(s). Overall, with the amount of work required the results could be considered quick to achieve relative to the number of years that your body may have been holding onto posture problems.
You go through an extensive initial consultation so that we can be sure this is the right place for you to get the care that you need. If you are offered to begin care at SpineCentral it means that you are a good candidate for chiropractic care and can expect great results.
We regularly reassess your condition and measure your progress. If we see that things are not progressing, we will find out the reason and course correct. It could be that another area of your health or lifestyle needs to be addressed simultaneously to structural correction and we will help you to do that.
Health is however a soft science and it is not always possible to predict every outcome. Is the very rare circumstance that we are unable to help you with your pain/posture/lifestyle we will help to arrange an onward referral to the next best doctor or healthcare provider for you.
If you are at all unhappy with your results of care we will refund your money spent.
