How Do We Do It?

I got to learn the science of restoring healthy spines, because I was once where you are, the patient desperately in need of a solution that worked.
In 2009 I was humbled by a significant injury. I fractured two spinal vertebrae in a snowboarding accident which I was very fortunate to walk away from.
Even though I narrowly avoided catastrophe I lived with significant pain that just two years later would cause me to doubt my ability to continue working as a chiropractic doctor as well as abandon all hopes of competing in triathlons.
I tried many different techniques within the traditional approaches like chiropractic, rehabilitation, laser therapy, nutrition, craniosacral therapy.
The problem was that none of them completely resolved the problem. At best If I found relief, it was short-lived, and the pain returned when I worked hard or trained on the bike. At worst, I would go straight back and relive the moment of injury with diaphragm spasm and pain when my spine when adjusted.
It was at that time, around five years ago that I was fortunate enough through a series of encounters to discover a new and deeper understanding of spinal motion and alignment.
This breakthrough in spinal health care is called Advanced Biostructural Correction, by the founder, Dr Jesse Jutkowitz. What he had discovered through 30+ years of investigation was a straightforward discovery:
BONES GO OUT OF ALIGNMENT IN DIRECTIONS THAT THE BODY CANNOT RETRIEVE THEM FROM
This detail had been missed for decades before and continues to be overlooked by much of medicine to this day.
Yet this one simple observation changes everything in the world of structural health because it alters the way that spinal adjustments are given.
Spinal adjustments are still required, in the same areas, just as chiropractors and osteopaths have done for decades.
It is the way that they are delivered, with the specific focus on the direction that the bones are corrected, which makes the big difference.
YOUR WHOLE BODY STRUCTURE WORKS TOGETHER AS ONE SYNERGISTIC FUNCTIONAL UNIT
This means that your spine, your jaw, your pelvis, arms, legs, cranial system and soft tissue systems are all linked up together, working as a single functional unit.
A problem in one area affects the whole and certain problems are more important than others because they cannot be fixed by the body itself.
These problems which cannot be self-corrected by the body lead to a ‘compensation’ re-alignment of your body that causes your posture to distort forwards and twist.
Over time, an accumulation of multiple layers of these compensation adaptations leaves your body vulnerable to numerous different joint/muscle pain syndromes and injuries.
This is why you used to recover quite quickly from your aches and pains, but over time they linger for longer and longer until eventuially they become chronic.
Understanding these key points means that correcting body structure problems, like back pain and sports injuries can become a consistent and predictable process if carried out correctly. Decades of lost function and mobility may also be recovered in the process.
One of the pitfalls in the modern era of structural health care is to focus solely on the part of the body which is injured.
Doing this can lead to the often dramatic reduction in pain (as is very commonly and consistently reported in the vast majority of chiropractic, osteopathic and physiotherapy practices).
(My intention in this article is not to speak poorly of other practitioners, because many deliver incredible results, especially with pain treatment. I would simply like to highlight the importance of true structural correction which addresses the underlying cause of the poor spinal movement and alignment that eventually leads to the injury in the first place.)
The reason that this is a pitfall is that the hurting/injured area is often a secondary compensation to a deeper problem elsewhere in the body structure. Unless that primary problem is corrected, the secondary pain/injury site may well return again in the future, or heal incompletely.
There is one key factor that pulls all of this together.
One measuring stick that will allow you to quickly assess the health of your body structure and also determine the effectiveness of any manual therapy applied to it.
Why is your posture so important?
Because when your bones and soft tissues are correctly aligned your body is able to stand perfectly upright, all by itself, without any effort.
Your muscles, ligaments, bones and nerves all work in synchronous integrity that allows you to heal and perform at your best.
Posture is the number one indicator of spinal health.
Simply because if your posture is falling forwards or is off centre.
You are at the mercy of gravity.
And gravity is the most pernicious and destructive forces on your body over a lifetime.
Without proper posture, human bodies may succumb to postural degeneration and all of the aches, pains, injuries and arthritis that accompany it.
WE CORRECT YOUR ALIGNMENT SO THAT YOUR BODY STANDS PERFECTLY UPRIGHT, WITHOUT ANY EFFORT
An important distinction needs to be made here.
Many well-intentioned, talented and hardworking doctors and practitioners claim to be able to correct posture.
If you pay attention, you will notice that they are using two simple approaches. Stretching out the tight muscles and training/strengthening the weak ones as well as adjusting the stiff locked up joints.
This can create the appearance of improved posture, but only when the patient is actively engaged in ‘trying’ to stand correctly.
The challenge then comes when you get distracted with work, or playing your sport, or lifting a weight, cleaning the house, whatever it may be, your posture will soon slump, only to have to remember sometime later to sit/stand up straight again.
GOOD POSTURE IS AN AUTOMATIC, UNCONSCIOUS RESULT OF OPTIMAL ALIGNMENT
Posture has nothing to do with effort or how you consciously straighten your body and everything to do with the correct alignment of your structure.
One of the discoveries that Dr Jesse Jutkowitz made was that when your bones aligned correctly with the structural correction method, you stand perfectly upright without any effort, and even when you relax completely, your body will refuse to slump.
Even after just one session.
The important point is this: When your body structure works correctly, it doesn’t require any effort to maintain a proper posture.
It’s not that you necessarily feel amazing when you are healthy (yet you do feel much better than you do when you are unhealthy), it’s that you just don’t notice your body. It fades into the background, and you can get on with doing what you do best, unimpeded by pain and tightness.
